Rectangular Gold

A sequence of elongated rectangular links — each one polished to a high gold finish and connected at its narrow ends — runs the full length of the necklace in an unbroken paperclip structure. The elongated rectangular link — known to Roman goldsmiths as the "long link" form — appears in civic and military jewelry of the 1st century AD as a chain designed to lie flat against the body without losing structural integrity. The geometry has not been revised in two thousand years (Higgins, R., Greek and Roman Jewellery, Methuen, 1961).
