Pliny the Elder recorded Tiger's Eye in his Natural History (77 AD) under the name "oculus mundi" — the eye of the world — noting its use as a stone worn against the evil eye. Ancient Egyptian craftsmen had reached the same conclusion centuries earlier: they set Tiger's Eye into the hollow sockets of deity statues, selecting it above all other stones for the living quality of its internal movement.
