Aventurine takes its name from the Italian "a ventura" — by chance — after Venetian glassmakers accidentally discovered that copper filings dropped into molten glass produced the same internal sparkle found in the natural stone. The name, recorded in trade documents from Murano in the 18th century, was then applied retroactively to the mineral itself, making Aventurine the only gemstone named after its imitation (Schumann, W., Gemstones of the World, Sterling Publishing, 2009).
