Gold foil glass beads were first produced in Venice during the 15th century, when Murano glassmakers developed a technique of encasing thin sheets of gold leaf between layers of molten glass. The method allowed light to pass through the outer glass and reflect off the foil within, creating a depth of color that solid pigment could not achieve. The technique spread across European trade routes and remained a closely guarded craft secret for over two centuries.
